"MUHD WIEANG SUN" (SHORT SWING)
……..“MUHD WIEANG SUN” (short swing) refers to the fist that requires you to use the turning motion of your waist in order to generate a sufficient amount of power. The swinging arm must not protrude beyond a 90 degree angle. Allow the fist of your other arm to cover the external portion of your ear. If you want to achieve effective results as well as a state of readiness when delivering strikes in a continuous manner… you should withdraw the leg (“TAWN KAH” in Thai) opposite to that of the swinging arm. For instance… if you deliver a “WIEANG SUN” (short swing) with your RIGHT fist, then you should withdraw your LEFT leg in order to obtain the proper distance when you want to follow it up with the shin or knee. The important thing to remember when you begin practicing the art is to be able to return to the proper fighting stance & correct guarding position as quickly as possible. You must be able to go in & out of the “Teacher’s Position” (“TAH KRU” in Thai).
Practice Method
Assume the “Teacher’s Position” (“TAH KRU” in Thai) of Chaiya. Suppose that you want to assume the LEFT stance. Your LEFT leg should then be in front of you.
Method One
Take a step forward with your RIGHT leg as you pull your LEFT arm downwards & allow it to cover your LEFT ear. The elbow points down without protruding outwards. The RIGHT arm is positioned around the RIGHT ear. The elbow points downwards without protruding away as you… simultaneously… swing your hips and lift your RIGHT elbow upwards until parallel with the floor. Angle the arm to about ninety degrees. Turn your entire body as you swing your RIGHT fist at about your shoulder level while withdrawing your LEFT leg in accordance with the power of the swing. Lift or open up your LEFT heel. The LEFT fist should still be covering your LEFT ear. Quickly pull back the leg on the side that you’re withdrawing your leg with to its original position. Return both your swinging arm and the arm covering your ear to the “Teacher’s Position” (“TAH KRU” in Thai) as quickly as possible. Make note of when you plan to change your fighting stance implicitly. You should practice everything in the same manner. However, we would… in this particular case… begin from the RIGHT stance as opposed to the LEFT one.
……..The “WIEANG SUN” (short swing) punch is a punch that you should practice together with the “TIM” (Chaiya style JAB) and “GRATAAK” (Chaiya style CROSS) punches. And… when you can deliver the “WIEANG SUN” (short swing) punch flawlessly... you should intermix it with other techniques in a variety of ways during practice such as:
“TIM” - “GOW GRATAAK” – “GOW WIEANG SUN” in order to obtain a decent level of expertise. It can also help you become better when performing “PUN LUM” (combos). Next time, I will explain about “WIEANG YOW” (long swing). I hope that you will all continue to stick around with me for that.
